It depends on whether your bin has two wheels or four.
Household-style bins run on a single axle that passes through the base of the bin, with a wheel on each end. Replacing the axle and both wheels together is the quickest fix for a wobbly or broken bin. We stock two sizes:
Not sure which you have? Measure the old axle end to end, or check the litre size moulded into the bin body. See the full range on our wheelie bin axles page.
Commercial bins run on four swivel castors bolted to the underside of the bin. Most have two braked castors at one end, so the bin can be parked safely on a slope or a loading bay. Our castors fit both metal and plastic 660, 770 and 1100 litre bins.
Standard castors suit bins on smooth, level ground, such as flats, offices and retail units. Heavy-duty castors are built for heavier loads and rougher ground, which makes them the better choice for construction sites, industrial estates and bins that are moved several times a day.
Replace like for like. If a braked castor fails, fit a braked one, so your bin can still be held in place. For a full refresh, our sets of four replace every castor at once:
Our spare wheels are complete castors, supplied ready to bolt on. If the castor housing is still sound and only the wheel is worn, a replacement plastic wheel or replacement steel wheel is a cheaper fix.
Maintaining a fleet of bins? Replacing worn wheels and castors costs far less than replacing whole bins, and those savings add up quickly for local authorities, housing providers, facilities management teams and waste firms. Our bulk packs of 20 axle and wheel sets keep the cost per bin down:
For larger orders of castors, call 01277 355044 or email sales@wheeliebins.com for a quote.
We also stock replacement lids, lid and hinge kits, 1100L refurbishment kits that replace the lid, hinges and all four castors in one go, and locks and hasps.
Our castors fit standard 660, 770 and 1100 litre four-wheeled bins, in both metal and plastic. Our axle sets fit 120, 140 and 180 litre bins (450mm axle) and 240 litre bins (552mm axle). If you're unsure, call us on 01277 355044 with your bin's make and size.
Tip the empty bin onto its side and undo the bolts that hold the old castor plate to the base. Bolt the new castor into the same position, then check the brake works before putting the bin back into use.
Braked castors have a foot-operated lock that stops the wheel turning and swivelling, so the bin stays put. Unbraked castors roll freely. Most four-wheeled bins have two of each.
Pull or knock out the old axle, slide a new 552mm axle and wheels set through the base of the bin, then push the wheels on until they click into place.
Yes. We sell bulk packs of 20 axle and wheel sets for 120 to 180 litre bins and 240 litre bins. For larger castor orders, call 01277 355044 or email sales@wheeliebins.com.
